A much-loved automotive icon returns better than ever in the form of the newly electrified 500.
The Fiat 500e retains all the aesthetic qualities that have made this city car so enduring – and it now delivers superb efficiency and a 199-mile all-electric range.
Despite the electric upgrade, this particular 500 iteration remains a captivating presence, with its quirky bubble-car good looks and numerous design flourishes that allow it to stand out from the crowd.
Take the vehicle’s front fascia, for instance, which speaks to the 500’s personality, something that most cars lack. Its ‘eyes’ are formed by elliptical headlights, which incorporate LED daytime running lights, making the car extra-visible in low-light situations. Just below, smaller but similarly designed fog lamps provide the 500 with even greater character while affording all-weather visibility. The signature Fiat 500 ‘moustache’ is perhaps not as pronounced with this all-electric model but it’s there nonetheless, adding to the car’s already distinctive appearance.
What’s more, this is an automobile that was created to survive the cut and thrust of hectic urban environments, with bijou dimensions that are perfect for big-city manoeuvrability. Nevertheless, there’s more room inside than you might expect. For a start, the Fiat 500 comfortably accommodates four adults, while a 185-litre boot increases to 550 litres whenever 50/50 split-folding rear seats are flipped.
Standard-issue highlights include a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which features DAB radio, audio-streaming-ready Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Safety features, meanwhile, include LED rear lights, Lane-keeping Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Cruise Control.
Naturally, the Fiat 500e produces no CO2 emissions whatsoever, making it a very eco-friendly motor car. A 42 kWh battery provides the vehicle’s electric motor with power, enabling nippy acceleration: 0-62mph in nine seconds – and rapid charging speeds: zero to 80 percent in approximately 35 minutes.
